Western Area Transformation Experience
October 19-22, 2006 in Las Vegas, Nevada
An excerpt from the brochure states: "This Western Regional
Transformation Conference is a hands-on, concrete experience of
learning, rather than a simple informational offering of a smatter of
"cookie cutter" approaches to Redevelopment Ministry. We will gather
in the dynamic and ever-transforming location of Las Vegas, which
offers both a myriad of activities and an up-close experience of what
our industrialized world and global culture are becoming. The Training
Experience is intended for both clergy and lay members of churches
seeking to be transformed in the ways that they approach worship,
congregational leadership, evangelism, mission, and cultural diversity
in the context of the 21st century."
Sound exciting, doesn't it? We would like to send at least 6 people
from Bethany to this conference – the church will pay for your
registration (transportation and hotel not covered). If you are
interested, please turn in your registration form to Rev. Lee no later
than this Tuesday, August 7th. For more information, check out the
website at www.21centurychurch.com, or contact Rev. Lee.
Hospitality House Needs
The Catholic Worker Hospitality House is running low on some of these basic
supplies. If you can help, please bring the items to the church, and we will be
sure they get delivered to the shelter.
If you would like to assist in any other way, please call Jennifer or Peter at the Shelter at (650) 827-0706.
Church and Society Request
The Church and Society committee has been focused on providing relief to assist
those affected by the hurricanes in the U.S. gulf region. We are researching
sending a second 'wave' of help to the area. Instead of first aid supplies we
are looking for schools that have specific needs to get their classrooms back in
order. Once we have a plan in place we will let you know how we can all help.
Our previous delivery was a great effort. However, we are still trying to
find a way to pay for the $165 in shipping costs that were incurred. If you can
help offset these costs, please contact Pat May.
Tots 'n Music Together
Beginning July 8th, Bethany will be hosting a music program for
infants, toddlers and preschooler and the adults that love them. Tots N Music
Together will be presenting a weekly program here at the church on Saturday
mornings. The program is acclaimed for its interactive music program involving
children in these age groups with their parents. There is a discount for Bethany
families attending. For more information, please contact the church for a
brochure and visit the Tots N Music Together website:
TotsNMusicTogether.com. Registration is limited.
FREE Summer Movie Nights
Come watch a movie at the church, and then have a chance to talk about
it afterwards! We’ve scheduled two movie nights for this summer, where we’ll
view the movie and then have a short discussion about it. Bring a dessert or
snack to share! We have access through the Presbytery to
study guides for these movies. The movies are each about 2 hrs. long, and the
discussion will last approx. 45 min.
Friday, August 11, 6:30 – 9:30 p.m. – "Chocolat" (PG-13)
Children under 13 must attend with a parent. Movie description: An
iconoclastic single mother (Oscar-nominee Juliette Binoche) and her young
daughter move to a village in France and open a chocolate shop -- that's open
Sundays -- across the street from a church. At first, Binoche's rich, sensuous
desserts scandalize the town, but soon the villagers welcome the newcomers with
open arms. Judi Dench, Lena Olin and Johnny Depp co-star in this 2000 Best
Picture nominee.
New Childcare Procedure
Since the CE Committee is having difficulty arranging for childcare on specific
Sundays, we are adopting a new procedure. With the new system, there will be a
list of willing childcare providers posted in the usher cabinet, and if
childcare is requested by a member of the congregation, the head usher will
locate one of the providers and ask him/her to do childcare that morning. If you
are willing to be on the list, please contact Susan May (871-6572) or the church
office.
Library Coming Soon
The bookcases outside the secretary's office have been cleared to make room
for a new church library. The books will be available for checkout - with no
overdue fees! If you have books you would like to donate to the library, please
bring them to the church with your name on them.
Bethany's 50th Anniversary!
Bethany's 50th Celebration: Saturday, Sept. 30, 2006: Do you have a
special Bethany memory or story to tell? Or do you have a gift -- a song, poem
or another creative expression -- to share in celebration of Bethany's 50
years? As we plan the after dinner program for the big anniversary celebration,
we would like to include a variety of Bethany
folk to make this event very special, and very personal.
Please prayerfully consider what gift of love you, your family or your group can
offer to those present as we honor Bethany's first 50 years, and look forward to
the next 50! Everyone is invited to participate: young or elder; those who have
been here 50 years or 50 days. You all have a gift to bring -- let your light
shine! Please contact Pastor John Lee (650-589-3711) or Kathryn Quickert
(650-871-9662) to be included in the program.
50th
Anniversary Mugs, T-shirts and Sweatshirts!
Show your love for Bethany to the world! Anniversary mugs, t-shirts and
sweatshirts will be for sale after church on July 2nd and 9th
and at the Summer Social on the 8th. (The mugs will be available to
take home - we'll take orders for the t0shirt and sweatshirts.) Let's all get
something to wear to the annual church picnic on October 1st!
